PAT testing ensures the safety of portable electrical equipment, which is defined as items that can be moved and connected and disconnected from an electrical supply.
Any electrical equipment that can be plugged into a power source needs PAT testing, including but not limited to:
- Laptops
- Phone chargers
- White goods like dishwashers, washing machines, tumble dryers, and microwaves
- Kettles and coffee machines
- Extension leads
- Computers and monitors
- Photocopiers
- Glue guns
- Sewing machines
PAT testing is required by:
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
- The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Scottish law
- For Houses In Multiple Occupation (HMO) landlords in the UK
The frequency of PAT testing depends on the type of equipment and where it's used:
Offices, shops, hotels and holiday lets
- Class 1 devices should be tested every 48 months, portable equipment every 24 months, and handheld equipment every 12 months.
Schools
- Class 1 equipment should be tested every 12 months, and Class 2 equipment every 48 months.
Construction
- All 110V equipment should be tested every 3 months.
Industrial
- Portable and handheld equipment should be tested every 6 months, and stationary, IT, and moveable equipment every 12 months.
General
- Items that are moved often, like chargers and hoovers, should be tested every 12 months. Items that don't move often, like fridges and printers, could be tested every 2 years.
